Do It Yourself Roof Coatings

How to Patch a Built Up Roof

  1. Prepare the built up roof membrane by removing all debris, contaminants and any loose surfacing material from the section to be repaired. The area should extend 16″ to 18″ beyond the affected area to ensure good adhesion of the repair patch.
  2. If membrane has been previously coated or has aggregate surfacing, carefully remove existing coating and aggregate from the roof and sweep clean.
  3. Asphalt Built Up Roofs should be primed with asphalt primer according to manufacturer’s application rate. Primer is solvent based and overuse can harm the membrane.
  4. If plies are damaged, the same number of plies must be installed using hot bitumen or cold applied adhesive. For a quick repair, you can install a smooth surface modified bitumen membrane over the prepared surface.
  5. Reapply the surfacing material (if present).
